• Mathematical Curves (The Mathematical Representation of the Magical Natural World)
It is a common belief among mathematicians that Plato (427-347 BC) is the one to be held responsible for coming up with and propagating the idea that the only genuine means of geometric constructions are the straight edge and the compass. Never the less, the truth is that Plato categorically rejected the use of complex tools as means of proving geometrical theorems. As true is also the fact that, undeniably, the straight line and the circle were providing symmetries and symmetrical combinations possessing properties well fitting into the philosophical framework of his ideas.
The straight edge and the compass been proved throughout the years tools enough for solving all the first and second degree problems, but for problems of a higher degree, the two previously proven reliable tools, was soon to be realised, were not sufficient any more. It was exactly at this point of realisation that we can more safely set the date of birth for the concept of mathematical curves and of most of the tools invented for their construction.
